Gel overlay aftercare: first 48 hours and 2-week care tips

The most important rule after an OVERLAY is simple: don’t pick, peel, or “test” the edges, especially in the first 48 hours. Your OVERLAY is a Brisa gel overlay refined over your natural nail length, so the strength comes from clean adhesion and a smooth seal. I see the best wear when you protect that seal early, then keep your cuticles conditioned. If you’re in Shrewsbury and you’re heading into a busy week, this is the low-maintenance routine that keeps your gel overlay looking glossy, not ragged.
First 48 hours after your OVERLAY: the soaking and hand-work rules
Right after your appointment, treat your nails like they’re set, but still “settling in.” I generally recommend you avoid prolonged soaking for 48 to 72 hours. Quick handwashing and brief showers are totally fine. The issue is long exposure, like dish-soaking, long baths, hot tubs, swimming, or hanging in the pool for hours. Water gets under tiny areas you can’t see yet, and that’s when lifting starts.
Quick rule for busy hands: if you wouldn’t do it bare-handed, don’t do it with fresh OVERLAY. Wear gloves for cleaning, dishes, gardening, and anything that keeps your nails wet or puts pressure on the tips.
Also, keep “heavy hand work” to a minimum for the first couple of days. That means ripping open boxes, scraping labels, or using your nails as tools. Use the side of your finger or a tool instead. And if you’re commuting in and out of downtown Shrewsbury, throw a small cuticle oil in your bag. It’s the easiest habit to keep when your schedule is packed.
- Do: keep showers brief, dry hands well, oil your cuticles.
- Don’t: soak, pick, or try to “smooth” an edge with a file at home.
- If something feels off: pause and text or call us before you experiment.
Week 1 with a gel overlay: gym, beach air, and the stuff that causes lifting
Once you’re past the first couple days, your goal is consistency. If you’re working out, a sweaty gym session usually isn’t the problem. The problem is what happens after, like sitting in damp gloves, leaving wet hands, or repeatedly washing with harsh soap and never re-oiling. Wash your hands, dry thoroughly, then apply cuticle oil.
In summer, Shrewsbury clients are often bouncing between pool days, beach days, and waterfront plans in nearby shore towns. Chlorine and salt can dry out the skin around your nails, and dry cuticles often lead to picking. Protect yourself by oiling before you head out, rinsing hands after swimming, and moisturizing after.
And please don’t glue a lift. Don’t file it. A small lift can turn into a bigger problem fast if you “thin it out” at home. If you feel a rough edge catching on hair or clothing, that’s the moment to reach out so I can fix it cleanly.
Cuticle oil twice a day: the 60-second habit that keeps OVERLAY glossy
If you do one thing for the next two weeks, make it this: cuticle oil morning and night. It keeps the skin flexible, reduces hangnails, and helps you stop picking because everything feels smooth. You don’t need a complicated routine. A drop per nail is plenty. Massage it in, then wipe any excess off the nail surface if you’re about to apply hand sanitizer or lotion.
My “don’t sabotage your overlay” product list
- A gentle hand soap, then dry hands fully.
- Cuticle oil, twice daily, more if you’re washing hands constantly.
- Gloves for cleaning and dishes.
- Skip acetone-based products unless I specifically tell you otherwise.
Want your nails to look freshly done longer? Keep the free edge clean and avoid scraping. Small habits beat big “fixes.”
Lifting, rough edges, or discomfort: when I want you to reach out (and when to book)
A smooth gel overlay should feel comfortable. If you notice lifting at the edge, a rough spot that keeps catching, or any discomfort that doesn’t feel right, reach out. I’d rather see it early than have you fight with it for a week. And if you’re planning a pool weekend or a shore trip, timing matters. I usually suggest you schedule your OVERLAY a couple days before heavy water time, then stay on top of oil and gloves.

For scheduling, plan a check or fill around 2 to 3 weeks, or sooner if you see lifting. Our OVERLAY appointment is 60 minutes and starts at $79. If you’re doing Broad Street errands or you’re heading to an event, ask about quick repairs so you’re not hiding your hands in photos.
I’m easy to reach, and I take your results seriously. If you’re commuting through Red Bank station, driving Route 35, or coming in from Little Silver, Fair Haven, Rumson, Middletown, or Eatontown, I’ll help you find a quick-access appointment that keeps your overlay looking clean and glossy.
If you’re searching online for a hair salon near me, hair color near me, or hair cut near me, I love being your one-stop spot, but I’m just as happy when you come in only for nails. Do what fits your life.
